University Johns Hopkins University In a deep dive into how nature makes self-organizing structures such as trees and leaves, a research team has revealed the key role played by wrinkles. The study, published in the journal Physical Review Letters, reveals that in two-dimensional (2-D) geometries, wrinkle-like “pillars” formed during the early stage of leaf and tree growth and self-organize into a shape and orientation determined by the overall growth pattern of the structure. The discovery suggests that growth structures of this type could potentially be used to guide the manufacture of components for micro- and nanostructures. “If you can control where and how the pillars form during growth, you can do a lot more,” says Lindsay McLennan, a Johns Hopkins doctoral candidate in biomedical engineering and lead author of the study. “You can design new micro- and nanostructures and composite materials.” McLennan and colleagues first noticed the patterns in 2-D leaf growth when observing the leaves of their petunia plants. Over time, the leaves became highly textured as a result of the growth, which itself was organized into a pattern, which they refer to as “epidermal growth.” “There was a very obvious self-organization,” McLennan says. “It was really visually striking to see.” The researchers were then able to perform computer simulations on 2-D lattices that allowed them to see how the growth patterns emerged. When the group varied the size of the lattices, the growth pattern of the lattices and the shape of the individual pillars themselves changed accordingly, confirming the pattern’s origin in the growth. “What’s unique about this study is that we can see how the pillars self-organize during growth,” McLennan says. “That allows us to understand the importance of those wrinkles, and how they shape the structure.”
